A required skill in the future workplace (defined as every workplace from tomorrow on) is the ability to think. Not trying to be condescending here, and I am not suggesting that we aren’t doing some version of thinking right now. I am talking about a different kind of thinking. For leaders, sometimes when we go head down into the daily work, our thoughts follow us down into the weeds. We get granular in our thinking and we get creative at solving for the problem that is in front of us. The problem is that when we are face down in the work, we miss how the bigger trends are changing. So, the type of thinking I am advocating for zooms out from the day to day and focuses on the core of your team’s business and the larger trends that are shaping that business. If we can better understand those larger trends, we can start making the small shifts now to remain relevant and profitable for years to come.
