“If you’ve seen one airport, then you’ve seen one airport.” If you are an airport professional, then you have heard this. Yet, when we hire, we seek applicants for airport positions with years of experience. I think we do this because we believe that their experience at a one-of-a-kind airport somewhere else will somehow translate to our airport. Like they will just “get it” quicker and we can save time on training. Maybe we think we can just get on with our stuff faster if we don’t have to babysit as long. But, this is stale thinking. For my entry-ish level positions, I hired for attitude and for team dynamics. And, we spent the time training them to experts. Rethink the objective when you are hiring. What do you really want? It’s about the person, not about their experience.
