The essentials [WFH Series]

Undervalued but essential WFH items:

1. Base. A place where you get started with work for the day. A place that is yours. A place that helps you mentally switch to work mode. The “place” could simply be a table or small desk.

2. Quiet. As best you are able. I have two young ones home with me these days. It’s a challenge. Great ideas grow in sustained quiet. I have moved my base as far from the action as possible.

3. Light. A good desk light is essential. Good natural light is a blessing. Get a good desk lamp. Move your base near a window. Look outside.

4. Breaks. Leave your base. Move around. Take a walk. Get your workout in. Completely break from the work a few times per day. Sometimes it’s not possible. Make those days the exception.

5. Resilience. Perfect days are hard to come by. Some days you have the power, other days you are off. Some days the kids will derail you, some days not. Some days starts early. Other days might run late. Stop trying to create an industrial model of working from home and instead be open to life’s currents.
