Quick tactic to help you navigate the week:
Let some comments go unanswered.
You know that one barb someone stuck in their email, or that one eye roll so robust it had the quality of words?
Surely you have been a victim of some passive-aggressive comment designed to do nothing but irritate. (Yes I have, and don’t call me Shirley.)
Simon Sinek tells a great story in his new book. Years ago he was riding with a senior executive from Apple. During the car ride Simon decides to professionally tease the Apple executive by noting how great Microsoft’s Zune was. Unfazed, the Apple executive simply responds, “I have no doubt.”
The executive could have gone on defense about the comparison of the Zune to the iPod. He could have teased Simon right back about something else. Instead, he offered only a simple response.
We can do the same. And by choosing to do the same we can eliminate friction, we can end the uneasiness, we can keep our relationships moving forward. I have no doubt.
What would happen if we let some comments go unanswered?
